Springfield were delighted to welcome Rebecca Minto, Solicitor with Birchall Blackburn Law and Dementia Friends Champion, into the office yesterday to present her information session to our staff, raising awareness of Dementia and the challenges those people who live with Dementia face everyday.

‘Rebecca helped us to better understand the condition and highlighted that we should never generalise or make assumptions about how a person may be affected by Dementia as people are affected in many different ways. She helped us to think about our attitudes towards people and how we can make small changes in our behaviour that may make a huge difference to someone living with Dementia’.

Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition.

A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it’s like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action – anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend. Whether you attend an Information Session or Watch the online video, Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help. From telling friends about Dementia Friends to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts.

A Dementia Friends Champion is a volunteer who encourages others to make a positive difference to people living with dementia in their community. They do this by giving them information about the personal impact of dementia, and what they can do to help.

Five things you need to know about dementia:

  • Dementia is not a natural part of the ageing process.
  • Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain.
  • It is not just about losing your memory.
  • It’s possible to live well with it.
  • There is more to the person than the dementia.
